Why aren't AirTags permitted at the Lone Star Leadership Academy?

While tools like AirTags can provide peace of mind in certain situations (like travel or personal belongings), they’re not a good fit for the camp environment. Here’s why:

Protecting Camper Privacy - AirTags can track locations without others knowing. In a shared setting like camp, where children live, sleep, and interact in groups, this raises privacy concerns—not just for your child, but for everyone around them.

Limited Functionality in Camp Settings - AirTags depend on nearby Apple devices to update their location. Many camps (including ours) have limited technology on-site, which can make location updates unreliable and potentially misleading.

Unintended Disruptions - Apple’s anti-stalking safety features notify people when an unknown AirTag is near them for extended periods. These alerts can create confusion or concern among our staff, who use Apple devices for photo updates and the emergency contact number given to parents.

Supporting Independence - One of the most powerful things camp offers is a chance for children to grow, explore, and build confidence away from screens and constant connection. Tracking devices can unintentionally work against that goal.

Please know that our staff is fully trained, attentive, and always available to support your child. We also provide regular photo uploads and contact you if anything out of the ordinary occurs to keep you informed and reassured during their time with us.

Thank you for understanding and for partnering with us to create a safe, respectful, and growth-focused environment for all campers.
